Through partnerships with universities SEAQIM is able to contribute towards the sustainable development of education in Southeast Asia with the most up-to-date and data-driven information. These collaborations take many forms including expert exchange, joint research activities and publications, workshops for staff development and resource sharing. SEAQIM is always looking for new projects to collaborate on with universities from within Southeast Asia and further abroad.

Case Study: University of Tsukuba

The University of Tsukuba is one of the oldest national universities in Japan. SEAQIM has worked extensively with the university over the past 5 years on a variety of projects. This includes experts from Tsukuba regularly providing presenters for the courses conducted by SEAQIM, with particular contributions given to the Lesson Study course; a topic which the University of Tsukuba has done extensive research on. A Foreign Research Fellowship Programme has also been running since 2010, where each year a representative from SEAQIM is invited to contribute towards research conducted at the University of Tsukuba. After each the completion of each fellowship a research report is written on a topic concerning mathematics education in Southeast Asia. The University of Tsukuba also contributes to research conducted at SEAQIM, with the university assisting with the review and selection of test items for the Mathematics Region Wide Assessment (MaRWA). Other collaborations include contributions from SEAQIM to University of Tsukuba conferences and vice versa.

Case Study: Parallel Conferences (ATCM, CDEMTEP and UNY)

In 2014 SEAQIM was part of a parallel conference with 3 other institutions; the international Asian Technology Conference in Mathematics (ATCM), the State University of Yogyakarta (UNY) and the Centre for Development and Empowerment of Mathematics Teachers and Education Personnel (CDEMTEP). The parallel conferences where held simultaneously, with the same key note speakers, but with each institution also running individual sessions.

The focus of the conferences were broadly on innovation and technology in mathematics education. It aimed to bring together experts, educators and researchers to exchange knowledge on utilizing technology for mathematics learning, teaching and research.

The conferences were held simultaneously at the same venue in Yogyakarta to encourage participation as they were all aimed at a similar target audience. This proved to be a successful concept with more than 600 participants from over 30 countries being involved with the event. SEAQIM contributed 4 key note speakers at the conference and awarded 10 full scholarships to allow teachers from across Indonesia to attend.

Case Study: Internships (Akindo and UPY)

In 2015 three internships were offered to students from Akindo (Akademi Komunikasi Indonesia), a tertiary institution focusing on public relations and broadcasting, to assist SEAQIM with the creation and editing of videos for the ‘QITEP in mathematics’ YouTube channel. The interns, over a period of two months, used their skills in video editing to create professional videos, some of which showcased the training courses at SEAQIM with participant testimonials, and others which were intended as teaching resources for educators.

Another internship partnership has been established with UPY (Universitas PGRI Yogyakarta). Students from the university’s Department of Information Technology will have the opportunity to work with the centres IT staff, and students from the Department of Mathematics Education, as part of their course on mathematics media development, will be able to work with SEAQIM staff on the development of computer and mobile applications for mathematics learning.
