Addressing 21st Century Challenges: Digital Literacy for Mathematics Teaching and Learning in Southeast Asia

Demands on teachers’ professional development increases each year. To address this issue, SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Mathematics (SEAQiM) held a course on Utilization and Development of IT-Based Mathematics Learning Media for Senior High School Mathematics Teacher.

Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) has impacted all sectors of society including the education sector. Considering the importance of ICT, SEAQiM set out to introduce pedagogic ICT integration to classroom activities. Held on 30 March until 12 April 2017, the course was attended by 30 Senior High School Mathematics teachers from all over Southeast Asian Countries.

The course was officially opened by the Head of General Affairs of PPPPTK Matematika who is currently also the Deputy Director for Administration of SEAQiM, Mrs. Ganung Anggraeni. Though not being able to attend this session in person, the Director of SEAQiM, Dr. Wahyudi welcomes all participants online through WebEx. In his speech, Dr. Wahyudi stated that all the attending participants are unsung heroes as their lives are dedicated for the future generations of the country. He also hoped that they can benefit from the course.

Generally, all participants were actively engaged in all activities guided by the facilitators. Materials delivered including philosophical and theoretical grounds of mathematics education. Insights on how to make use of ICT to deliver hard-to-understand subject was also presented. Examples of these are by using Geogebra, Virtual Manipulatives, Calculator and also Math Game. Furthermore, the participants had the opportunity to practice their lesson plan during real teaching at SMAN 8 Yogyakarta, on Saturday 8 April 2017.

“I am very happy with the whole process of this course that I experienced here. I gained a lot of knowledge that I can apply in my school.” said one of the participant of the course.


Class Activity

Besides academic activity, participants had the chance to visit an exquisite historical place, Borobudur temple. To share and exchange the information on the variety of culture in their country, by the end of the course, participants presented a little of their culture during Understanding SEAMEO Countries Culture session. Dances, songs, poems, and even theatrical shows were presented. Giving more colors to the room, participants were dressed to reflect their culture. Most participants were very enthusiast in sharing their culture to the room. Forms were given out to determine the best show of the day in which was announced by the end of the session.

Culture Performance

The session then continued with the Closing Ceremony, which was officially closed by the Head of PPPPTK Matematika, Dr. Dra. Daswatia Astuty. The three best participants selected based on their academic score was announced during this session. These three participants were Laely Rohmatin Apriliani from SMKN Jawa Tengah, Indonesia; Nur Aqilah Binti Ramli from SMA Darussaadah, Kedah, Malaysia, and Yusma Ria Zulaicha from SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo, Indonesia.

ICT can be used in many aspects including in education. SEAQiM designed the Course on Utilization and Development of IT-base Mathematics Education to facilitate teachers in integrating ICT in their teaching process. SEAQiM expect the participants will implement and disseminate what they have learned during the course to their class and to other teachers in their region.
