Yogyakarta- PISA or Programme for International Students Assessments are commonly the hot issue in Indonesia. PISA is not assessing the curriculum but assessing what students have learned in the class and its impact in the real life. It is the triennial assessments organized by OEDC (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). There are two benefits of having PISA, first is the country could see how good their education system is in terms of making an education policy. The other benefit is sharing best practice or learning from the top performing PISA countries how to perform the assessment better.

Since the result of PISA in 2015 shows that Indonesia still in the 62nd rank from a total 72 participating countries and has minor improvement in the skills of Indonesian 15-year old students, the support from government is highly needed. In some regions in Indonesia, the condition and quality of education is still poorly equipped that means the education personnel need to work harder independently. In another words, the teachers need to have initiative to attend the course/training to enhance their own quality.

SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Mathematics (SEAQiM) as a centre that provides programmes to enhance mathematics teachers’ quality has assisted teachers in Indonesia in getting to know about PISA and what is inside it. The three-day workshop (April 17-19, 2017) aim was to provide insight to teachers on PISA issues. The total of 30 Mathematics teachers of Junior High School joined the Workshop on Developing PISA-Like Problems & HOTs Items for Mathematics.

Since this workshop focused on improving the knowledge and skills of teachers in teaching mathematics, the trainers of this workshop were Mr. Fadjar Shadiq and Mr. Wahid Yunianto who have been involved in development of PISA-Like Items and series of regional assessments. At the beginning, the teachers do the questions of PISA-Like and design the similar problems. Then proceed with micro teaching or peer teaching.

In the closing ceremony, Dr. Wahyudi congratulated all participants and explained further actions after this workshop. As a result, the expected accomplishment is the teachers understand PISA math problems and the difference with the problems that exist on national exam or math text books in school so that the teachers can design a similar matter PISA and get an idea of how to teach it.
